Hawthorne District Portland Neighborhood
The Hawthorne District is one of the most popular and interesting neighborhoods in Portland. It runs across Southeast Portland on SE Hawthorne Blvd. The majority of the neighborhood is center on the area between 42 and 30th Avenue. The area is mostly dominated by younger, liberal residents, but there is a nice mix due to the high value of the history of the district and the age and size of many of the homes in the area. It is a very densely populated area for both businesses and homes. The area is known for it’s many locally-owned businesses, restaurants and coffee shops, many of which operate late into the evening. Perhaps the biggest attraction in the immediate area is the Bagdad Theater and Pub, which has a Pub and Restaurant, and a next door theatre, featuring one of the largest screens in the state. It shows first and second run movies and has even had a few world premieres. It is on the national register of historic places and originally opened in 1927. There is also a branch of Powell’s Books the world famous Portland book stores. Hawthorne extends through the Sunnyside and Mt. Tabor neighborhood as well.
