Living in the downtown area of a bustling metropolis might not fit everyone’s idea of the perfect lifestyle, but for those who are drawn to the fast track of city life, locals will tell you that downtown Portland can offer some pretty nice perks.
One of the most obvious benefits to living in the heart of downtown Portland is the ease of commuting to and from the downtown and the suburban areas, as well as getting from one place to another within the city center. For most people living in here, walking, biking, and public transit are the preferred mode of transportation. However, there’s no need for a car or bike if you use the city’s nationally recognized TriMet. But the town is certainly flexible and residents find it convenient to use all types of transportation.
Walking to your destination is one way to get (and stay) healthy, and Portland is definitely inviting to pedestrians. In fact, Portland city blocks were intentionally made smaller than in other cities (200 feet instead of a typical 300 to 800 feet), making it a short stroll to Portland’s numerous corner stores. If your job is downtown, this means you may actually be able to live without a car entirely.
Portland’s downtown district has some fantastic residential areas where you can purchase a Portland loft and live in the core of the city in style. Depending on where your job is, you may just end up within walking distance from it.
There are quite a few very attractive residential areas you could live in if you want to purchase a loft or condo in Portland, but an increasingly popular place is an area called The Pearl District. Popular due in part to the many stores and easy to access transportation, The Pearl District is also where many classy art galleries and high-end businesses are located.
